Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) General FAQs
-
What is IPL?
-
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology uses light-based therapy that emits multiple wavelengths of light. These wavelengths are absorbed by the melanin in the hair, generating heat that damages the hair follicle. This process helps remove existing hair and reduces future hair growth over time.

Is it safe for my skin?
- The Zapper Ice Pro is safe when used as directed, but it may not be suitable for everyone. Before using, review the skin tone and hair color chart in the user manual, complete a patch test, and make sure your skin is clean, dry, shaved, and free of irritation. Do not use The Zapper on very dark skin, recently tanned or sunburned skin, tattoos, moles, irritated skin, or if you are photosensitive or taking photosensitizing medications. If you are unsure whether IPL is right for you, check with your doctor or dermatologist before use.
-
Does it hurt?
- The Zapper Ice Pro is designed to make IPL feel more comfortable. You may feel a warm, tingling sensation when the device flashes, which is normal. The built-in Sapphire Ice-Cooling System helps cool the skin during treatment for a smoother, more comfortable experience.
-
How long does it take to see results?
- Results vary by person, hair color, skin tone, treatment area, and consistency of use. With regular use, you may begin to notice less hair regrowth over the first few weeks, with more visible reduction over time as you continue your treatment plan. For best results, follow the recommended 8-week treatment schedule, then continue with maintenance as needed.
-
How long does it last?
- IPL is designed to reduce future hair growth over time, so you can expect long-lasting results. For best results, use The Zapper consistently for the first 8–12 weeks, then touch up as needed. Please note that the frequency of required use depends on individual hair growth rates, which may vary.
-
Where can I use it on my body?
- The Zapper Ice Pro is safe for use on areas like below the chin, underarms, on the bikini line, on arms, back, shoulders and legs.
- DO NOT use the device on the following areas: around the eyes or near the eyebrows; on nipples, areolas, labia minora, vagina, anus, scrotum, or inside the nostrils and ears; over or near artificial implants or devices, such as silicone implants, pacemakers, subcutaneous injection ports (e.g., insulin dispensers), or piercings; on moles, freckles, large veins, darker pigmented areas, scars, or other skin anomalies without first consulting your doctor; on warts, tattoos, or areas with permanent make-up; on areas where long-lasting deodorants have been applied; on sunburned, recently tanned, or fake-tanned skin.
-
Does The Zapper work on all skin types, hair types, and hair colors?
- No, IPL does not work equally for everyone. The Zapper is intended for suitable skin tones and works best on naturally darker hair. It is not recommended for very dark skin tones, and it may not work well on white, grey, red, very light blonde, or very fine peach-fuzz hair. This is because IPL targets melanin, or pigment, in the hair. If there is not enough pigment in the hair, the device may not be able to effectively target the follicle.
-
Can I use IPL over tattoos, moles, or skin tags?
- No. IPL should not be used directly over tattoos, dark moles, birthmarks, or skin tags. These areas contain higher concentrations of pigment, which can absorb more light energy and may cause discomfort, skin irritation, burns, or discoloration. When treating an area, avoid these spots by covering them or working around them. If you're unsure whether an area is suitable for treatment, consult a healthcare professional.
-
Can I use IPL while pregnant?
- As a precaution, IPL treatments are not recommended during pregnancy. While there is currently no evidence that IPL is harmful during pregnancy, it has not been extensively studied in pregnant individuals. Hormonal changes can also affect skin sensitivity and hair growth patterns, which may impact treatment results. We recommend waiting until after pregnancy before starting or continuing IPL treatments.
-
Is this ok to use if I have eczema or psoriasis?
- Do not use The Zapper directly over irritated, inflamed, broken, or actively flaring skin. If you have eczema, psoriasis, or another skin condition, we recommend checking with your doctor or dermatologist before using IPL, especially if you plan to treat an area where you commonly flare. IPL uses light and heat, so using it over compromised or sensitive skin may increase the chance of irritation, redness, burning, or pigment changes.

- Is IPL worth it?
- For many people, yes. IPL can significantly reduce unwanted hair growth over time, helping you spend less time shaving and dealing with razor bumps, nicks, and ingrown hairs. While it requires consistency during the initial treatment period, the long-term convenience, smoother skin, and reduced maintenance make IPL a worthwhile investment for those looking for a more permanent alternative to traditional hair removal methods.
Usage and Tips
-
I’ve purchased The Zapper and already have a trimmer. Is there any point in keeping my trimmer any longer?
- Yes. Your trimmer and The Zapper do different jobs, and they actually work well together.
- The Zapper helps reduce hair regrowth over time, but it is not an instant “hair is gone forever” treatment. You’ll still need to shave or trim the treatment area before each IPL session, especially in the beginning. Your trimmer is also helpful for areas where IPL should not be used, for quick touch-ups, or for keeping hair neat without going fully bare.
-
Do I need to trim or shave first before I use The Zapper?
- Yes. Shave the area before using The Zapper.
- The skin should be clean, dry, and free of visible hair before treatment. IPL works below the skin’s surface, so shaving first helps the light reach the hair follicle more effectively and reduces the chance of hair burning on the surface of the skin.
- Do not wax, pluck, or use depilatory creams right before treatment.
-
Should I be wearing sunglasses or eye protection while using The Zapper?
- Do not look directly at the flash, and do not use The Zapper around the eyes, eyebrows, eyelids, or eyelashes.
- The Zapper has a skin contact sensor, so it is designed to flash only when fully pressed against the skin, but the light can still be bright. Look away when pressing the flash button and only flash when the treatment window is flat against the skin.
-
What’s the best time of the day to use The Zapper?
- Use The Zapper when your skin is clean, dry, freshly shaved, and not about to be exposed to heat, sweat, sun, or friction.
- Time of day matters less than your skin prep and aftercare. Avoid using it right before sun exposure, workouts, swimming, hot showers, saunas, or heavy exfoliation.
-
Can I use The Zapper during the morning and night?
- No. Do not use The Zapper multiple times in the same day or repeatedly treat the same area in one session.
- Over-treating the same area can increase the risk of redness, irritation, burns, or pigment changes. Follow the recommended treatment schedule and give your skin time between sessions.
-
How frequently should I use The Zapper?
-
Follow the recommended treatment schedule:
- Weeks 1 to 4: Use 3 to 4 times per week
- Weeks 5 to 6: Use 2 to 3 times per week
- Weeks 7 to 8: Use twice per week
- After 8 weeks: Use 1 to 2 times per month for maintenance, as needed
-
Follow the recommended treatment schedule:
Hair growth varies from person to person, so results and maintenance needs may vary. Do not use it more often than directed.
- I have light sensitivity - can I use The Zapper?
- If you are sensitive to light, photosensitive, or taking medication that makes you more sensitive to light, do not use The Zapper unless your doctor says it is safe.
- IPL uses intense pulsed light, and photosensitivity may increase the risk of irritation, burns, or other adverse reactions. If you are unsure, check with your doctor before using.
-
Can I use The Zapper shortly before I plan on working out, swimming, or other outdoor activities?
- After using IPL, your skin may be more sensitive. Avoid activities that can trigger heat, sweat, friction, chlorine, salt water, or sun exposure right after treatment. That means it is best not to use The Zapper immediately before working out, swimming, tanning, beach days, or long periods outdoors.
-
I use a chemical exfoliant and acids in my shower and skin care routine (AHA/BHA/PHA, retinol, hyaluronic acid, salicylic acid, etc.), can I use The Zapper while I use exfoliants?
- Use The Zapper on clean, dry, shaved skin, then follow with a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer. Skip exfoliating acids, retinol, scrubs, fragrance, and alcohol-based products around treatment time.
